I finally finished my Archer and I am so proud of myself - I am not apprehensive about buttonholes anymore. Thank you, Jen, for such a fabulous sewalong. It is an excellent resource and I look forward to as many as you feel up to doing.
I'm so proud of you too! A button up is a big undertaking but nothing to be scared of taken one step at a time. I'm so glad you've accomplished this and enjoyed the sew-along!
I'm fairly new at sewing and I've never made a proper shirt before. I'm waiting on my Archer shirt pattern to arrive and thought I'd watch the sew along while I wait....I have to say that this sew along is by far the best detailed instructional video I have ever seen. I cannot thank you enough...this will be my first "Grainline" pattern and if all the other tutorials are even half as good as this one then I can't wait to sew more of the Grainline Studio garments. It's as good as any sewing classes I could take. Again, thank you so much.
Aw thank you so much for your kind words! So excited to have you sewing up the Archer and if you have any questions you can just leave us a comment on the video or send us an email. We're always happy to help!
This video tutorial is absolutely great!! Super clear, detailed and a good pace. I have sewn along with the whole Archer series - and now have a fabulous new shirt! Defo worth taking your time with each step. I have been sewing for a couple of years but have always fallen at the collar hurdle. Following this tutorial has empowered me with the skills and confidence to tackle any shirt. Happy sewing people :-)
Dear Jen , Thank you so much for creating this sew along . Best shirt tutorial EVER ! You truly are a brilliant teacher and you being so calm while showing us all the necessary steps is so comforting ! I have finished my first Archer and will be starting my second Archer next week . I hope to improve certain areas and shorten the sleeves slightly . I was so terrified of the collar as usually this is the part I get confused however with your assistance , I just sailed through this part and I was so happy ! Thank you . I will look at yr patterns to see what other sew alongs are available .
OMG! You don’t know how much I needed this video. I’m not making that top, but I am seriously considering it because it is super cute and you have been extremely helpful. Thank you!
I don't know how I can ever thank you Jen! You do a fabulous job of presenting. There is much to weigh us down right now, all important and worthy of our attention. This sew-a-long helped me by giving me something I had control over. I have sewn several Archers in the past. This one was the most fun and the most rewarding. I took my time and watched each step. One of my favorite things is learning new techniques and you taught me plenty. I am so proud of my newest Archer. It is by far the best. I am thrilled that you want to make a sew-a-long for all of your patterns!! They sooth my sewing soul.
You just made my week! It was definitely a bit stressful making these with everything that's going on but it also gave me a nice routine to go upstairs and film and edit. I'm so glad you were able to get a bit of a routine out of it as well! And I'm so proud of your Archer too!!!
Thank you so much for this sew along. I've sewn off and on for 40 years and learnt so much from you. Fantastic tips and tricks and beautifully presented with just the right amount of talk. You are wonderful. I'd like to see trousers done next. maritime shorts?
I just gotta say that I hated sewing buttons by hand so much, I avoided button closures. But I have a great button sewing foot now and watching you here reminded me of why I was so happy with my newer machine! I am looking forward to starting an Archer shirt this week-finally found the right fabric for it.
Oof I also just hate sewing them on by hand, but I'm so happy you've reunited with your button sew-on foot! Definitely tag us on social media if you post because I love seeing everyone's projects!
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I learned so much from you and I enjoyed your teaching. Im proud of my shirt in spite of its imperfections and room for improvement! I would love an Alder shirt dress sew along. That would be awesome. But thank you again, I have a second Archer planned! Also, I have to sew the buttons on and then I will be posting!
We're almost done with the 14-30 draft of the Alder so I'll definitely get one up with the release of that! So glad to hear you got a lot out of the sew-along, and I'm also so proud of your shirt!!
Thank you so much for this complete sew along, all this videos has given me the confidence to sew my first archer shirt! These videos ara amazingly helpful and it's really nice that you're planning to do the same for all your pattern. For the next one, I'd ask for the Yates coat, already planning my winter projects :D Thanks again!!!
I'm so glad you're ready to take on the Archer! As I always say, it's not really hard, just a lot of compounding steps. The Yates would be so fun, i've been meaning to do a sew-along for adding some tailoring so maybe a 2-parter once we get it drafted for 14-30!
@@GrainlineStudioSewing I've been thinking for more options for the next sew along 😛 The detailed explanation of the hack to turn the Archer into a sleeveless shirt would be really nice to make summer version 😍
This is the best button and button hole placement video on RUclips! Super clear and demystified the whole process. My one question is if we do wrong sides together to mark the buttons, will the side to side variation be the mirror image of what it should be? Thanks for such a wonderful tutorial!
If you're talking about the cuffs and collarstand yeah, you'll need to mark the side where the button will sit so for the collarstand you would mark the button to the left side of the buttonhole. Hope that makes sense, currently sick so my explanation powers are a bit lacking. If you have q's let me know!
Thanks so much for these videos, am looking forward to completing my first shirt, just the cuffs, hemming and buttons to go. Could I suggest the Moss skirt and the Morris blazer for future sew alongs?
I have to tell you I’ve just used your entire tutorial for making the archer button up. I’ve made a few of them before and love them but I do get a bit stuck at certain points. Following your videos to the letter has made all the difference.I’ve made my best one yet. So accurate. Thank you so much. I’m inspired and empowered to make my husband a shirt now. Can you suggest a good male shirt pattern? He’s seen this last one of mine and would like a home made shirt of his own. Any suggestions welcome. Thanks again. Brenda
@@GrainlineStudioSewing Thank you very much for your suggestion of the thread theory shirt. I’ve looked at it and I’m definitely going to get it. The details of the shirt look interesting. Having the detailed sew along will help as well. Thanks again for you very clear and easy to follow Archer button up video. I do love making them. Here’s to the next one. Brenda Greaney.
@@brendagreaney965 Oh I'm so glad it looks like it'll work out! Thread Theory makes some really great patterns and they're one of the very few that focuses on menswear. Have a great time sewing!
I think probably the reason you sew through your fingers is because you have cooked your skin with the steam so you have no sensation, LOL. Thanks for doing the sew a longs I learn something from each of the lessons. Did you get the Teflon Pressing Sheet yet?
I just ordered it yesterday! Will keep you posted on its arrival. And yeah definitely plays into how I can sew my fingers to a garment, hahahaha! 50% convenient, 50% very disturbing!
I've been making shirts for years, but I still learned a lot from this EXCELLENT sew along!! Thank you.
I'm so happy to hear this! Hope your shirt turned out beautifully!!

Brilliant instructions. Really love this pattern and will definitely make more in this and the other version. Thank you.
So glad to hear it was helpful!
This was so helpful! I vote for Linden or Thayer next!
Thank you again! I'll be back to sew with you probably next month. Have to print the Archer pdf 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Absolutely brilliant video.
Thank you, glad you found it useful!
Excellent demo and explanation of button placement. I would love to see the Farrow Dress as a tutorial. But no hurry for me.

I'd love a sew-along of the Farrow Dress or the Thayer Jacket. Good vibes for Fall!
Ooh Thayer would really be a fun one! The Farrow is in development in our new size range so I'd love to do that one once the pattern is out!
Best tutorial!
This was a super helpful video!
I'm so glad!
Would love to see the linden sweatshirt. Thank you for this tutorial. I learned so much. Wonderful teaching.
We'll definitely be working on that one! Thanks
Merci beaucoup,Thank you verry mutch
Thanks for the great tutorial! I used to make most of my clothing, but hadn’t done it in years. This got me back into it. It all came back!
It's just like riding a bike isn't it? I'm so excited you're back garment sewing, enjoy the new chapter of the journey!!
